Screencasting with Free Software

There are many ways to capture whats going on on your screen and share it via Facebook, YouTube, etc.  There are professional ones, which do an awesome job, like Techsmith’s Camstudio and Adobe Captivate which can range from $299.00 to $799.00.  But sometimes you just want to create a simple screencast without all the bells and whistles for free or cheap.

There are several free or relatively cheap options like Jing, Screenjelly and Screenpresso.  My personal favorite is Jing.  Jing is made by Techsmith, the same company that makes Camstudio and is one of the best free pieces of software that I have come across.  Jing allows you to capture video or still shots and it does exactly what it is intended to do with no frills and annoying ads.  You can annotate your screencasts or screenshots with a basic text box, arrow, highlight, or rectangle.  When you are all finished, you can then upload the finished product to Screencast.com (a free online video storage site), directly to your FTP, your blog, Facebook or YouTube.  You can also choose to save it to your computer as a flash file or an mpeg.  As I mentioned, Jing is FREE but your finished products will have the Jing logo on them, alternately you can pay 15 bucks a yr to have them removed.  Let’s face it, $15 a yr is nothing!  I spend that much during one visit to my favorite fast food joint.

Here are a few ways that you can use Jing:

  • Collaborate on a design project
  • Share a snapshot of a document
  • Narrate your vacation photos
  • Capture that pesky bug in action
  • Show Dad how to use iTunes
  • Comment verbally on students’ homework
  • Post tidbits from your life on YouTube, Twitter or Facebook
